In Regina's early years, a sewer system was one of many
important public works projects for the town. Part of the reason
for originally incorporating as a city in 1903 was to increase the
amount it could borrow to build it's sewer and water systems.
Before the sewer system, Regina was serviced only by a
scavenger, and disease epidemics were commonplace like many other
frontier towns of the day. By 1910, Regina had many other modern
conveniences such as paved streets, water, and electricity that
made it an attractive place for families to settle.
This facility removes grit, sedimentation, sludge, and scum
where the remaining wastewater is passed through these large
aerated lagoons to separate most of the remaining suspended matter.
Lastly, in the summer it is subject to ultraviolet disinfectant
before finally being released to Wascana Creek Northwest of the
lagoons.
