Geocache Description:

Adopted from Wanderlust.

This full-sized cache is located in the heart of the Nantahala Gorge.

It will be found off of a beautiful bike/pedestrian path which parallels a 1.5-2 mile portion of the Nantahala River. If you have a bicycle, this makes for a great, relatively flat ride through the forest with the rushing whitewater of the river by your side!

The cache is approximately 1 mile from the parking area, which is a gravel parking lot with a kiosk giving information on the 80 mile Bartram Trail. [Named after the famous Quaker botanist who traveled through these mountains in the 1700s.] Cross the two iron-truss bridges over the river and hang a right onto the path. The cache is near the ruins of an old homestead. (There is an alternate parking spot which shortens the walk to about 0.2 miles one-way.)

"Nantahala" is Cherokee; it translates into "Land of the Noonday Sun." This name comes from the high cliffs and steep gorge walls along the river that shut out the direct light of the sun until nearly noon.

This is a very popular whitewater paddling destination, so you will find numerous outfitters. You will also find a few restaraunts, inns, campgrounds, a coffee house, roadside stands, and more!

You are looking for a medium-sized plastic cylinder-ish container. Good luck!
