Geocache Description:

Another cache hidden at a historical site not many people know about inside Stone Mountain Park. I would have really liked to have hidden a larger cache here, but some of the faint trails around the area show that muggles do come here occasionally. SO DON'T FORGET TO BYOP TO SIGN THE LOG.

The closest parking can be found at N33 47.920 W084 08.336. From there it is less than a 1/3 mile walk on the sidewalk. Once you get closer to the cache site, you will have to bush whack about 150 feet into the forest.

From the cache site, you can also see a spectacular view of one of the first granite quarries to the North. Please stay away from that area as there are dangerous granite walls over 100 feet tall. During the 1996 Olympics, this side of the mountain was lit at night by the near by lights mounted on top of the pole.

Now for a little history of the cache site.

Three years after the railroad spur line from Stone Mountain Village was completed in 1847, large-scale granite quarrying began here in 1850. That railway was destroyed in 1864 when William Tecumseh Sherman(General Sherman) marched his troops through Stone Mountain. The Village of Stone Mountain was destroyed at the same time. After the village was rebuilt, the railroad was then rebuilt in 1869 by the Georgia Railroad. Over 3 miles of track in what we know as Stone Mountain Park today, were laid and connected the granite quarries to the Georgia Railroad. These rails were used to carry the Quarrymen and Stone Cutters, to and from the quarries. They were also used to carry granite out of the quarries. The railroad that exists in the park now has nothing to do with the original rail lines. Click on the following link for a little humor about General Sherman and the Yankees. http://www.ornot.com/humor/sherman.html

The small segment of rail you will be visiting is the only rail that remains of the original 3 miles of track. It was last used in the 1970's when granite mining came to a permanent halt. Notice the small rail gauge size. There is also an old steel tank located next to the rail. This tank most likely stored fuel for either the torches used by the Stone Cutters or fuel for the "Dinky", which was the railroad engine used to haul people and granite along the rails.

I have walked through the forest area back towards the parking area where I have found what looks to be many raised areas the rail line use to run.

You are looking for a small magnetic key holder. Please replace it back exactly where you found it so that it will not be spotted by the occasional muggle passing by.

Take some time to enjoy and explore the area. Please feel free to share you findings in your log entries.

Enjoy the hike and hunt.
