Geocache Description:

This cache, also known as “The Remarkable Trees of Caledon” is a multi stage cache that explores the hilly “front section” of the park. The cache is a series of camouflaged lock & lock containers that contain clues and information. There are 3 stages plus the final cache. Find the final stage by solving these coordinates: N 38º 19.(A+G)44 W 77º 0(E+G).DH(A-F)

Welcome to the Remarkable Trees of Caledon. Caledon Natural Area has 2,579 acres of land donated to the state in 1974 by the Smoot family. Shortly after the land was donated Caledon received a designation as a National Natural Landmark. While Caledon is known for bald eagles the designation was for a stand of eastern hardwood climax forest. The forest in this section of the park is full of mature trees and looks similar to what the first European explorers would have seen.

In 2006 The Remarkable Tree database was created at Virginia Tech. The database was created to help catalog significant examples of VA trees species. Several trees at Caledon were included in the database. As you search for this cache take the opportunity to check out some of these remarkable trees.

Stage 1: Red oak.
This tree has a diameter of  ______ inches (AB) and contains nearly _______ board feet of wood (CDEF).

Stage 2: The Tulip poplar grove.
Although between 200 & 250 years of age this stand of trees was nearly destroyed by a hurricane in ________ (GHIJ).

Stage 3: Remarkable Red Oak.
N 38º 19.(A+G)42   W  77º 0(E+G).DHI

Also, you need to understand “offsets” to solve this one. When someone gives you an offset, it means to add or subtract that amount from your current coordinates. (It’s not complicated, but bring a pencil and paper so you can right down the solution.)

This cache was part of the Virginia State Parks Geocaching Wildlife Adventure. This game ended on December 15, 2010. However, the park has taken over this cache so it is still active. Rewards are no longer available for this cache, but we will be launching the Virginia State Parks 75th Anniversary Geocaching Adventure in March 2011. For upcoming information on the new series go to: www.virginiaoutdoors.com.

Proximity issues with stages of this cache, if any, have been granted an exception to the guidelines by geocaching.com and are placed with permission and under the oversight of the state park system.
