How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This is a short puzzle cache where you will need to use some easy math skills and some word skills. The final contains a log only. BYOP. Please take note of how you find the cache and replace it EXACTLY the way you found it.

Cache container is smaller than a 35mm canister.

The SQ in the cache name above signifies Spirit Quest, a project to distinguish those caches that are set in cemeteries or memorial gardens. Please be respectful of the area and observe their rules and posted hours. Michigan law states that you are only permitted to visit cemeteries dawn to dusk throughout the state unless other hours are posted. Please also be respectful of others in the park that may be paying their respects or mourning their loved ones.

This cache is located in Roseland Park Cemetery, in Berkley, MI. Roseland Park was founded in 1906 and consists of 129 acres with an abundance of trees and shrubs. Wildlife on the property includes deer, fox, and squirrels. One of its two chapel mausoleums is a historic chapel mausoleum that was designed by noted Detroit Architect Louis Kamper. The cemetery also has a garden mausoleum and a crematory.

At the posted coordinates you will find a headstone of a man who had a farm. Look for the name of a woman who shared the same name as one who was married to a famous George. Be sure you have the RIGHT grave marker. Now for the math…

For the north coordinates: First, convert the months to numerals…i.e. Jan = 1, Feb = 2, etc… Add all the numbers representing the months and days together. To that sum add the last month listed two more times, Add three to that total. Subtract this number from your starting north coordinates to get the last three digits for your new north coordinates.

For the west coordinates: Take the year of her marriage and subtract 1801. Take this difference and subtract it from your starting west coordinates to get the last three digits for your new west coordinates.

At this final destination is someplace James (from the first headstone) would have worked. You will also find the grave stone of our BeccaBoo, who loved Geocaching and just happened to be the same age as James’ wife when she died. You will find the cache very near here.

Happy Caching!
