Plenty of parking is available along the west side Stanly Lane
south of Highway 121. A quick, level walk on relatively solid
ground will lead you right to the cache. Be mindful of ticks during
the spring and poison oak during the spring and summer. Please
replace the cache in a manner that keeps it hidden from view.
Congress Valley Creek is a relatively unknown creek that drains a
small corner of western Napa County known as Congress Valley.
Beginning in the hills above Buhman Avenue, the creek flows
southeast for four miles through oaks, pasture lands, and vineyards
before reaching the river's marshlands just to the east of the
cache site.
Congress Valley Creek was once a bit of an unconventional creek
though. Rather than flowing directly into the Napa River as most
would expect, Congress Valley Creek fanned out into a broad,
tangled delta on the western shore of the Napa River. As a result,
the area between the cache site and the river was once a massive
tidewater wetland. Unfit for agricultural use, the creek was
channelized to drain and dry out the land as well as straightened
to prevent flooding during winter rains.
However, after decades of agricultural use, recent efforts have
been made to restore the natural flow to a portion of Congress
Valley Creek. On the east side of the highway, many of the levees
which flank the creek have been breached allowing the creek to
spread out and help re-establish the natural wetlands along the
river.
