Tyrrel’s Wood is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust and situated just a stones throw from the A140 south of Long Stratton.
A plantation was created here in the 1830s but the presence of old oak and hornbeam pollards and woodbanks hint of a much older history. The centre of the wood is true ancient woodland which is named Boscus de Grischave in records dating back to 1251
It has been designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) because of the large variety of woodland fauna packed into such a small area and contains a medieval ditch that bisects the wood.
Paths wind through dense undergrowth, emerging in open areas that boast big oak trees and some curious wood sculptures. A circular route around the site can be enjoyed and, despite no waymarkings or information board it is relatively easy to follow. Why not explore the whole wood while you’re here.
The cache itself is a medium clip-lock plastic box placed close to one of the many paths and is well hidden. It is to the north of the main wood and outside the area managed by the Woodland Trust. Please replace exactly as you find it. The wood is popular with muggle dog walkers and you’ll be able to judge how many people are about by the number of cars on the car park.
Only use the hint if you’re really stuck because it kind of gives the game away!
This is the first of my Norfolk Enchants series of caches which are all to be placed in locations that I have grown to know and love over the years. Some will be easy and some not so easy but I hope you enjoy hunting for them as much as I have setting them.
Happy caching everyone...
!!!!!!!!!CONGRATULATIONS TO DR APE ON BEING FTF!!!!!!!!!
