Goshen United Methodist Church is a church
full of history. The sanctuary has gone through many changes. But,
still stands as one of the oldest public buildings in
Georgia.
Methodist in the United States became organized at the Baltimore
Conference in 1785. Originally, Georgia was a district in the South
Carolina Conference. In 1830, Georgia became a separate conference
from South Carolina Conference in 1830 and the first Georgia
Conference met in Macon on January 5, 1831.
On March 14, 1846, eight churches were named in the First Quarterly
Conference records of the Springfield Circuit. These churches were
Antioch Chapel, Goshen, Guyton Church, Shiloh, Springfield,
Tuckasee-king and Turkey Branch.
Goshen Church was built in 1751. It was served by the early pastors
of the Salzburgers and later for a short time by the Moravian
missionaries. For more than fifty years, Goshen Church was served
by Lutheran pastors who preached in German. Because of the language
problem, in the 1790s, Pastor Bergman invited his friend, Bishop
Asbury, to send Methodist preachers to preach here. Goshen Church
remained a part of the Ebenezer Charge until after the
Revolutionary War. A generation later, in 1820, it became a
Methodist Church. The Methodist Church was organized at Goshen,
under the direction of the Reverend James O. Andrew, and was
allowed to use the Goshen church edifice. The actual dead to the
property was transferred to the Methodist Conference several years
later. Among the first members of the Goshen Methodist Church were:
David Gougle and his daughters; Mrs. Nowlan, wife of Major Nowlan;
major and Mrs. John Charlton.
The sanctuary originally was located on the banks of the Savannah
River between Ebenezer and Savannah. Some time during the 1820s, it
was sawed in half and relocated from the swamp to its present
location and was reassembled. The sanctuary is almost certainly the
oldest public building still standing in the state of Georgia in
continuous use.
Since the early years, the church has grown substantially over the
years in both membership and outreach efforts. Goshen means
“the land of promise” and the church has remained so
for many generations.
This cache has been placed with
permission. However, there is a bit of information with which you
should be familiar. You are welcome to enter the cemetery grounds
to respectfully visit the gravesides (there are many historical and
beautiful grave stones to see here.) But, entry into the cemetery
grounds is not necessary to access either stage of the geocache.
You are also welcome to respectfully view the outside of the
sanctuary. But, there is no need to “poke around” in
the surrounding shrubbery in anyway. HERE'S A BIG HINT: the first
stage will take you to a historical marker where you will gather
information for the final coordinates. The final cache container
will be found past the cemetery and sanctuary and just inside the
wooded border. So, as you see, there is no need to poke around or
otherwise seek the cache near the sanctuary or inside the cemetery
boundary. I know this really goes without saying, but please be
respectful of the surroundings and be careful not to cause any
destruction to the area. We don’t want the church to have a
bad impression of the geocaching community.
The coordinates at the top of the cache
listing will bring you to a historical marker. You will need to
read the historical information to find the numbers to fill in the
coordinates for the final geocache container.
You will find the cache at:
N 32 14.A B C
W 081 12. D E F
A = The second number in the year the marker was erected.
B = The second number in the year that Reverend Lewis Myers moved
to Goshen.
C = The forth number in the year that Reverend Lewis Myers moved to
Goshen.
D = The second number minus the third number in the year that the
Methodist Church was organized at Goshen.
E = The last number in the year that Goshen Church was built plus
the last number in the year that Reverend Lewis Myers moved to
Goshen.
F = The first number plus the second number in the year that Goshen
Church was built.
After you find the cache container, please rehide it well.
Thanks.
The First To Find will find an unactivated dolphin geotag waiting
as their prize.
Most of the information contained within this geocache
description was found on the website of the Goshen United Methodist
Church.
Congratulations to wimr on being First To Find.
