Geocache Description:

The original Woodlands Library

My family moved to The Woodlands in January of 1992. My mom told me how excited she was to have a library behind our house. The week before we moved the library burnt down as a result of arson.

I was a freshman in high school and I remember the weird eerie feeling when our backyard had burned books littering it. I sat for hours just starring at the "slab" and the burnt pages of history littering the forest and backyards.

In the densely populated town of The Woodlands sits an empty space. This space was once the home to The Woodlands library until it got burned to the ground due to arson in January of 1992. It feels out of place in this sprawling city. Even as The Woodlands has grown tremendously from 33,000 in Jan 1992 to almost 100,000 today this lot still remains empty.

As you stand on it you feel the history beneath your feet. The Woodlands was once a sawmill town and this very small library was all that was needed.

$800,000 in insurance money was made available as a result of the fire. Ray Bailey Architects was approved by Commissioners’ Court as the Library architect in February, 1992. David Hennington was retained by the architect as the library consultant for the project.

In May, 1992, South Branch Library opened in temporary space of 10,000 sq. ft. in a former grocery store in Grogan’s Mill Shopping Center in The Woodlands, primarily with thousands of donated books.

In July of 1992, an LSCA grant of $100,000 was approved by the State Library to help with the construction of the new South Regional Branch.

You might have to fight a few thorns to retrieve the cache, but no bush knife necessary. And if you look hard enough you might even find the burnt pages of history buried beneath your feet.

Thanks Mom (libbil) for thinking of the idea for this cache. And for creating and maintaining this cache. Your wonderful!
