Geocache Description:

PLEASE NOTE: All caches in this series are hidden within the coverage area of the station. They are not located at the fire station.

Wilmot Township Fire Department consists of 3 stations. New
Hamburg, Baden and New Dundee. 75 volunteer firefighters (25 at
each station) This is a picture of the side wall of the New Hamburg
Station.

In 1858 the first fire engine, a hand pumper was bought for
$735.00. It was housed in a shed on Peel Street. In 1859, the town
council considered buying uniforms for the volunteer fire brigade
but the cost of $6.50 for coat, belt and hat was too much for the
budget. The following year they awarded the firemen $4.00 a year
for their efforts.

The fire department is responsible for a wide range of
activities. These include firefighting and all categories of rescue
matters along with the handling and disposing of hazardous
materials. Performing activities such as the removal of trapped
victims from vehicles or building may be required. The firefighters
are also trained in advanced first aid and would assist in the
treatment and evacuation of individuals when required. Our fire
personnel train on a continuous basis to ensure their ability to
respond to emergencies with the township and handle them in a fast
and efficient manner.

This cache is to replace a previous cache that was lost because it was carried away by the mighty raging Nith River during spring thaw. The original container is probably in Brantford by now. The cache number was GC23YBR.
