Geocache Description:

David Millard Junior High School

From this location, looking south of the First Baptist Church, in 1919, the "new" Asheville High School was constructed. (The above picture was made in front of the school looking north with First Baptist at the far left). The name was changed in the early 1920's to David Millard High School. A new school built in 1927 on McDowell St. became home to the renamed Asheville High School and the school on this site became David Millard Junior High School. Sadly, in 1972 the beautiful building was torn down to make way for the Charlotte St. expansion. One of the most unique physical features of this school was the worn stair steps evidencing the thousands of students who passed through this building - one of them being me. This cache is in honor and memory of David Millard Junior High School.

"Then cheer for her banners waving high
Greet her with hopes that live for aye,
Pledge we our loyal hearts and true
D.M., to you"
