I tracked down information on the
cemetery from an article in the Omaha World Herald.
The cemetery contains about 900 headstones, some of which date to
the early 1880s. The cemetery board has a fund drive to pave the
semicircular drive that runs through the graveyard. The main
operating expense is mowing. The cemetery has no sprinkler
system.
A few heaadstones contain the German words "Schlafe sanft in
Frieden,"
or "Rest calmly in Peace."
The graveyard initially was called Schroeder Cemetery for the
family that owned the land on which the earliest grave sites were
placed.
Dr. Harvey Link, who served in the Union Army in the Civil War,
came back from the East with a new name for the graveyard - Mount
Auburn Cemetery. Link was buried there in 1906.
Other names I ran across while looking for the perfect spot -
Rohwer, Stender, Lorenz, Schnack, Denker and Biel.
As always when in a cemetery be respectful of the graves and the hours the cemetery is open.
Any logs found not doing that will be deleted.
Thank you and Happy Geo Hunting!
