The Tower Centino, an ancient sight tower near Ripafratta.

In questa zona, sul confine tra le città di Lucca e Pisa, sorsero tra il 1100 e il 1300 tutta una serie di opere fortificate e di torri di avvistamento e segnalazione. Le varie torri erano in contatto visivo tra loro, per poter comunicare tramite segnali (con specchi di giorno, con segnali luminosi la notte). Alcune di queste torri furono distrutte durante l'occupazione tedesca nella II Guerra Mondiale, altre si sono conservate fino ai nostri giorni.
La Torre del Centino occupa un rilievo isolato e garantiva il necessario controllo su un sentiero di scorciatoia e di aggiramento della rocca di Ripafratta, posto fra Cerasomma e Pugnano. La torre, edificata all’inizio del XIII sec., aveva pianta quadrilatera ed era protetta esternamente da un recinto ottagonale. Sostanzialmente integra, la fortificazione fu mantenuta in esercizio fino al XV sec., quando venne soppiantata con l’introduzione delle armi da fuoco.
Per raggiungere la Torre del Centino si parte da via Silvio Lega, a Ripafratta. In fondo a questa stretta via parte il sentiero 00 che si inerpica sulla collina. Dopo 400m troverete una biforcazione, seguite i segnali bianco-rossi del sentiero 00 a destra e continuate a salire. Dopo altri 300m circa sboccherete in una stradina sterrata che porta a una recinzione, continuate sempre verso destra di fianco alla rete(ci sono dei cartelli indicatori). Il percorso totale è di 800m e si fa in 15-20 minuti con tratti abbastanza ripidi, meglio avere delle scarpe da trekking.
Siete ora arrivati alla Torre. Purtroppo è stata recintata con cartelli di divieto d'accesso, se volete visitarla ricordate che si tratta sempre di edificio pericolante. La cache comunque è nascosta intorno alla Torre, e non occorre entarci per trovarla.
IL BONUS - Abbiamo voluto premiare i volenterosi che visiteranno entrambe le Torri di Ripafratta con una cache bonus.
All'interno di questa cache (un contenitore rotondo lock'n'lock), sul logbook, troverete infatti metà delle coordinate per la cache bonus "La terza torre", l'altra metà la troverete nella Torre Niccolai (cache La Seconda Torre). Quindi, buona caccia e buon divertimento a tutti !!!
Questo è un ottimo punto di partenza per altre caches vicine, quali Rocca di Ripafratta e Rupe Cava, tutte raggiungibili dai vari sentieri.

On the borderline from Lucca and Pisa it were built in 1100-1300 various sight-towers. These towers are in sight one to another, so they can communicate by signals (with mirrors in day, with fire in night). Some of these towers were destroyed by Germans during WWII.
The Tower of Centino was build on an isolated hill, and it granted control on the path around Rocca di Riprafratta. This tower was built at the beginning of XIII cent. and had a square plant, rounded by an octagonal wall.
To reach the Tower of Centino you can start in Via Silvio Lega, in Ripafratta. At the end of this little street begins path 00, that climb on the hill. After 400m you find a bifurcation, follow path 00 (red-white marks) on the right and proceed to climb. After 300m you arrive at a fence, proceed on the right (there are some signs that shows the way). The total lenght of walk is 800m and require 15-20 minutes; it is a bit steep, so best if you have trekking shoes.
The access into the tower is forbidden because it's dangerous; the cache is hidden around the tower, so you don't need to enter to find it.
THE BONUS - We want to reward who wants to visit both the Towers of Ripafratta with a bonus cache. In fact, into this cache (a rounded lock'n'lock), on the logbook, you can find half of the coordinates for the bonus cache "La terza torre" (The third tower), the other half you can find in Tower Niccolai (cache La Seconda Torre - The Second Tower). Good hunt !!
This is a good starting place for other caches in near, like Rocca di Ripafratta and Rupe Cava, that you can reach by the various paths around.
