Fenced In Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

pshelto: I'm really bummed that none of the geocachers liked this one enough to replace it, but now it's free for a new cacher to hide their own.

Geocache Description:

Looking for a pill bottle with camo hidden in an area that has ample parking. Please do not go inside the fence area (read below).

In 1939, the Manhattan project officially began. The fear was that the Germans were developing a nuclear weapon and the US was behind. Although Manhattan is the most well known area for the research, the actual Uranium enrichment happened in eastern Tennessee. This is where the cache comes into play.

In August 1941, a dusgruntled worker left the Oak Ridge site with approximately 3 kilograms of enriched uranium (the "little boy" used 63kg or so). His purpose was to meet with German scientists to discuss a possible trade. Unfortunate for him, the FBI caught news of the escape and began to track him. The fenced in area is where the FBI finally caught him and had to use force to take him down. The reason for the fencing is to keep people from the area as there is a slightly higher amount of radiation here (it is rumored he tried to bury the stuff before the agents got him).

Please stay on the pavement. The radiation here is not enough to cause any problem but this remains off limits.

BTW, this fenced in area is actually an old holding area for the AHTD. The above story is entirely fictional (minus a few facts).
