This cache has been archived.

TeamDotOne: We had a blast yet again, assisting the Foundation in their preparations for the Memorial Day celebration. We appreciate everyone taking the time to come out and lend a hand. Always a pleasure to see people giving back :) Time to put this one to bed until next year.

Geocache Description:

This is an opportunity for us to give back and help this wonderful cemetery. Through our volunteer efforts, we can help restore the natural beauty of the outdoor resources here and together, we can make an enormous impact with just a little effort. For this CITO, we will be picking up any trash that we find, raking leaves, picking up fallen twigs and branches, and a few other tasks we have been asked to help with. There will be about 20 rakes and 4 leaf blowers onsite.

This beautiful old Cemetery is located on East 118th Street in the midst of a busy urban area of Cleveland, Ohio. For the most part, the Cemetery is inactive, there are very few new burials. The Cemetery is now owned and operated by the East Cleveland Township Cemetery Foundation. The mission of the Foundation is to own and maintain the East Cleveland Township Cemetery as a historic landmark, to restore, preserve and share the cemetery's pioneer Victorian heritage and to build a solid financial foundation for the cemetery's future. As of this date 17,216 people have been confirmed to be buried in East Cleveland Cemetery. It is believed there are additional individuals not yet identified.

Some of the more important burials and memorials in the East Cleveland Township Cemetery include, but are not limited to: Collinwood School Fire Memoriam where some of the children who died as a result of the Collinwood School fire of 1908 were buried in East Cleveland Cemetery.

Veterans of the the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Indian War, Spanish American War, World Wars l and ll, Korean, and the Vietnam War were also buried in East Cleveland Cemetery. The Foundation is still 'finding' veterans but the count is over 435 from the various conflicts buried in the Cemetery.

The first C.I.T.O. event here held on November 9, 2008, as well as the subsequent C.I.T.O. events, was such a huge success thanks to all the wonderful volunteers who came out to spend a cold and wet Sunday with us!! After seeing the coating of leaves on the ground, it was hard to believe there was green grass under there - - but everyone, and we mean everyone, rolled up their sleeves, grabbed a rake and a tarp, and did an unbelievable job!! It has been our personal pleasure to be able to host these events and give back to the community in a way that welcomes us back each year for more. We will continue to host these C.I.T.O. events here as long as there is work to be done.

Words cannot express enough how impressed we were and how much we truly appreciated the turn out and all the gracious volunteer help. The Foundation was absolutely shocked with the amount of leaves everyone was able to pile and line the cemetery drive. The look on their faces at the end of the day was, as they say, priceless.

Other tasks:

  • Paint new shed
  • Rake and shred 'spiky balls' sweet gum
  • Cemetery section markers
  • Scrape and paint leaf vacuum
  • Any other tasks we can help with

When:
Sunday, 05/16/2010. Please plan to arrive at 9:00 a.m. so we can coordinate our efforts. We will start our clean-up efforts at 10:00 a.m. and our efforts will probably be completed around 3:00 p.m. depending on the number of attendees.

What to bring:
Bring work/latex gloves, grabbers and buckets, if you have them (5 gallon buckets work great for carrying litter)! It is highly recommended that you wear a long-sleeve shirt and jeans, and a decent pair of shoes. And as with any event held here in the Cleveland area, please dress for the weather, as appropriate. For those of you that have lawn chairs, you may want to bring one with you, just in case.

What else?
We are planning a pot-luck picnic around noon, so bring a dish to share. There are tables and electricity inside the heated chapel for our use, a good functioning restroom, and 2 charcoal grills available. We will be providing the hot dogs, buns, ketchup/mustard, and the charcoal for the grill. The East Cleveland Township Cemetery Foundation has generously offered to provide bottled water, some soft drinks, hot water for tea and cocoa, and brewed coffee.
