Mysterious Mound Traditional Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
A traditional cache hidden near a mysterious mound of rocks with 5
large trees growing out of the top, close to the Salmon Run hiking
trail on the Summersville Lake property, just south of
Summersville, WV.
There are several old rock walls, foundations, and rock piles
around the Summersville Lake property. These are all that remain of
the buildings, dwellings and other structures from the inhabitants
(including the entire town of Gad) who had to vacate the land to
make way for the dam and lake construction in the late 1950's. The
cache is hidden near a unique mound of rocks which was most likely
left over from this activity.
To access the Salmon Run trail from U.S. Route 19, turn onto
Airport Road (CR 19/32). If you are traveling north, this is a
left-hand turn; if coming south, turn right. The cache is
approximately a .50 mile (1 mile round trip) hike along the trail
from either the northern trailhead on Airport Road or the Hypes
footbridge mid-point trail access along Salmon Run Road.
For the northern trailhead, after turning off Route 19 stay on
Airport Road and go about .25 mile to the gravel pull-off and trail
sign on the left. There is parking space for 3 or 4 vehicles at the
trailhead.
For the mid-point trail access, after turning off Route 19 onto
Airport Road make another immediate left-hand turn onto Salmon Run
Road. Go about .50 mile to the large gravel parking area on the
left and the Hypes Footbridge just across the road. Walk across the
bridge and hike out the connector trail until you come to the
Salmon Run Trail split. From there take the right-hand trail that
goes uphill.
Please resist the urge to bushwhack and stay on the trail until you
are within 70 feet of the cache. You will be able to see the mound
from the trail.
The cache is in a 1.7 quart Lock & Lock container. Initial
contents are: a folding lint brush, pencil sharpener, 3 polished
glass "gems", 2 pencil erasers, Disney Heroes watch, badge clip,
softball pin, keyring, first aid ointment, Smokey Bear magnet, WV
coal pendant, pocket tool, and a log book with pen.
