Geocache Description:

This cache is part of a themed multi-cache series based on the DC Comics character "Superman".

Several months back I placed a Batman-themed series, and shortly thereafter began thinking about one based on Superman. This particular series has been a little more difficult to design than the other one, though, because it's much harder to find real-world analogs to a Man of Steel who fights aliens (not to mention being one himself) and giant robots than to the gritty urban setting of the Caped Crusader. As things stand, I did manage to imagine tenuous connections between each cache area and its named location from Superman's history, but at best they strain even my own credulity. I also ended up abbreviating this series to 7 locations instead of 9.

Your ultimate goal in the series is to find the Fortress of Solitude, which is at the following mystery coordinates: N38,01.ABC W121,50.XYZ. Each of the other caches in the series -- all of which can be viewed here -- contains the numeric equivalent of each letter in the coordinates. Replace the letters with the appropriate numbers, and you've found the location of Superman's arctic retreat. GOOD LUCK!

KRYPTON

Krypton is a fictional planet in the DC Comics universe, and the native world of the super-heroes Superman and -- in some tellings -- Supergirl and Krypto the Superdog. Krypton has been portrayed consistently as having been destroyed just after Superman's flight from the planet, with exact details of its destruction varying by time period, writers and franchise. Kryptonians were the dominant people of Krypton.

Krypton is usually portrayed in comics as having exploded as a result of a nuclear chain reaction deep within the planet's unstable Uranium core. As originally depicted, all the civilizations and races of Krypton perished in the explosion, except for one survivor: the baby Kal-El who was placed in an escape rocket by his father, Jor-El, and sent to the planet Earth, where he grew up to become Superman.

In some versions of the Superman mythos, additional survivors were later discovered, such as Krypto the Superdog, Supergirl, her parents (kept alive in the "Survival Zone", a similar parallel "dimension" to the Phantom Zone), the criminal inhabitants of the Phantom Zone, Dev-Em, Beppo the Super-Monkey, the Eradicator, the residents of the bottle city of Kandor and the real parents of both Superman and Supergirl.

BYRON

Byron is a census-designated place (CDP) in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 916 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 2.5 square miles (6.6 km²), all of it land. It is located 5.5 miles (9 km) southeast of Brentwood, and was named for a railroad employee.

Byron's first post office opened in 1878.

THE CACHE

This is a pill bottle, containing a log and enough room for only very small items. There is also a single greenback for FTF. BYOP.

There are several places to park in the immediate vicinity, none of which are truly curbside or paved. I suppose it's possible that wet weather could cause very low flooding at GZ, but based on the terrain I think it would be a rare occurrence. There are no brambles or thorns near GZ currently, but other surrounding vegetation indicates they may be present in late Spring.

Congratulations to Team Klinward for the FTF!!!
