Geocache Description:

Springbrook Pinnacle dominates the lower reaches of the Springbrook section of Lammington National Park and offers fantastic 360 degree views from coast to rainforest. This is a must for all you geocaching adventurers out there.

In keeping with Queensland Department of Environment and resource Management (National Parks) current guidelines on Geocaching, the cache location is NOT at the published coordinates which is the summit of the Pinnacle. However you will need to get up there to collect the missing numbers to help you find the cache, which is located outside the NP boundary on public land.

You can start at either the Canyon Lookout car park or at Tallanbana picnic area. The Pinnacle can be clearly seen thrusting up from the virgin rainforest like a...well, ummm...nipple! yes, it looks exactly like that. Located some 3km distant as the crow/rosella flies, it's a 10km, 3-4 hour round trip with some off-track and a bit of climbing/scrambling involved.

You might find this trail map useful: (visit link) . It's marked as "The Pinnacle" on the map.

From the car park, get onto the Twin Falls circuit heading south (anti-clockwise) and descend to the caves near Twin Falls. From here, you take the newly re-opened Warrie circuit and pass the magnificent Rainbow Falls and then Goomoolahra Falls. Continue past the smaller Ngarri-dhum Falls until the path takes a sharp left turn just after the "Guardians" - 2 large cedar trees that have burned-out bases and look a bit like tee-pee tents. It's here you leave the track at S28 12.817 E153 17.612. Before you do so, you'll need to find the 1st clue - count the combined number of "feet" or butresses on both the Guardians.

Leave the path opposite the the Guardians. It's not very obvious at first but you will soon spot a distinct footpad heading downhill along the ridge for 5 minutes or so. You then climb gradually for a further 10 minutes crossing a large tree that has fallen over the path at S28 12.496 E153 17.667. You then enter an area of open eucalypt forest with lots of brush box and dense ferns. Follow the path along the ridge until you come to an open knoll covered in gnarly woody tee-trees. Make your way through these and down into a small gully before the final precipitous ascent to the summit. Its approx 30 minutes from where you left the path to this point.

If you have a fear of heights you will find this last scramble a challenge. It's not recommended in the wet as rocks will be slippery with near vertical drops on either side (hence the cache difficulty grading). A short rope may be useful for extra security. However there are plenty of hand and foot holds to help you up. Your reward will be what has to be one of the best views in the whole National Park. With the Gold Coast to the east, you can look back to Canyon Lookout and the Springbrook plateau. To the south you can see the twin peaks of the Cougals and onwards towards Byron Bay.

After you have taken in the views, you'll need to find the 2nd clue. On a small vertical rockface at the summit you will see a pattern in the rock's structure that clearly looks like a number. Use this number to locate the final cache location.

Return back the way you came. Take care to follow your trial on the way back to the main track, there are a couple of false trails leading downhill which will are easy to take by mistake. Once back on the track retrace your steps back to the start. Or, if you are up to a bigger challenge, you could continue around the Warrie circuit which would make a 20km full-day walk.

The final cache location is located in a nice area where you can take a well earned break after your exertions! The cache itself is small and well camouflaged, but not a micro. Enjoy!

Final Cache Location: S28 09.g74 E153 15.6n2. Where "g" is the total number of feet/butresses of both Guardians and "n" is the number you found on the Pinnacle.

We hope you enjoy this cache. We would enjoy seeing photos of you ontop of the Pinnacle so don't forget your camera and post one or two in the gallery.

In the logbook you'll find a number which you'll need to find our "Herbz Challenge" cache (visit link)
