Mare Balticum, The Baltic Sea, is a brackish inland sea bordered by the coasts of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. The Baltic Sea is connected to the Atlantic ocean through the narrow and shallow Danish straits and belt. Deepest part of the sea is 459 meters deep while an average depth is only 55 meters.
The Baltic Sea is the largest pool of brackish water after the Black Sea. Brackish water is fresh water and saline water mixed together. Brackish water contains 0.5 to 30 grams of salt per litre while saline sea water contains 35 to 50 grams per litre.
Fresh water flows to the sea from more than two hundred rivers. The main source of salt in the Baltic sea is infrequent pulse-like ocean inflows though the danish straits.
Before 80's these inflows used to happen on average every four to five years but since then it seems that pulses occur only once in a decade. Latest pulses have been in 1983, 1993 and 2003.
Deeper parts of sea usually suffer lack of oxygen and there is no or very little life. More saline water is denser so it sinks to the deeps and stays there. Only ocean inflows provide new water with oxygen.
Hundreds of extremely well preserved ancient ship wrecks have been found from the Baltic Sea. There aren't strong currents The low salinity level of the sea preserves wood and there are very few wreck-eating ship worms in the Baltic Sea.
Itämeri on vähäsuolainen sisämeri joka rajautuu Viron, Latvian, Liettuan, Puolan, Ruotsin, Saksan, Suomen, Tanskan ja Venäjän rannikoihin. Itämeri on yhteydessä Atlantin valtamereen Tanskan salmien kautta.
Itämerestä on löydetty satoja poikkeuksellisen hyvin säilyneitä laivanhylkyjä. Meressä ei ole voimakkaita virtauksia eikä vuorovesi-ilmiötä. Puuta syövät laivamadot eivät selviydy vähäsuolaisessa vedessä. Vähähappisuus hidastaa metallirunkoisten hylkyjen ruostumista.
