The Brick Works

Bricks for the rebuilding of the mansion in 1745 - 1777 were probably made locally. Brick making had taken place at Belhus since at least 1603 at a site which lay on the northern boundary of Aveley Parish this continued throughout the seventeenth Century, but was abandoned by the 1840's. A new brickworks was established by 1876, but was only in use for about 20 years because of the lack of raw material. However a structure from this phase of works can still be found in Little Brick Kiln wood. A mound with a circular brick structure on the top is located there. A recent Archaeological survey of the site suggests that this structure was either a mixing pan or possibly a pug mill. Mixing pans were used to settle and wash the clay by washing large amounts of water through it. Pug mills were used to mix and partially dry the clay prior to it being transported to the works to be moulded into bricks and dried.

Another brick structure can be found at the edge of Oakwood on the eastern side of the motorway. In 1979 it was excavated and is an icehouse built around 1760 when Sir Thomas was transforming the estate.
