The Government wanted to get mail from St. Louis to San Francisco, California. There were currently trains running from St. Louis to Tipton, so the mail was sent on the train to Tipton. The Butterfield Stage then carried passengers and overland mail to San Francisco, Ca. John Butterfield received $60,000.00 for the contract. The first trip was on September 16, 1858. The contract called for 2 stages a week, with the trip not taking more than 25 days. The 2975 mile trip was divided into 200 stations along the way. The horses pulling the stage could be exchanged for fresh horses at each station. If it was near evening the travelers on the stage could stay in the overnight facilities at the stations.
This should be handicapped and wheelchair accessible with assistance. Be observant to the possibility of large grain trucks in the area.
