Geocache Description:

This is the last if you started from Denstone or the first from Alton. The cache is along the platform of the now disused Railway Station of Alton. You may need the use of a writing implement to retrieve this one.

The footpaths for this series are generally firm compacted stone. They are in good condition, but unpaved, and there may be some steeper inclines to reach some of the caches. The minor trails can be wet and muddy. The tree cover even in winter is quite dense, so don't rely 100% on your GPS.

This station was built in 1849 in an Italianate Villa style, and is far grander than any other on the line. In recent years it has been restored to its former glory. The reason for the grand architecture is that the station was the stop for the Earl of Shrewsbury, who owned Alton Towers. He had a luggage lift installed to hoist his baggage up to Alton Towers his gothic revival residence, which is situated at the top of nearby Bunbury Hill. The station also comprised a three-storey tower which contained the Earl's suite of waiting rooms and its platform was particularly long to satisfy the Earl's desire to have impressive surroundings in which to receive his guests. The railway company therefore gave him a much better station than the little village really warranted.
