Rumours of shipwrecked treasure hidden by the mysterious Captain Charles Johnson have been whispered around the Great Lakes region for more than 250 years. Many suspected that documents pointing to its location were held secretly under lock & key somewhere in his native England. Suspicion grew when new clues to its whereabouts began to emerge shortly after a daring theft from the British Library vaults in 2009. This is a multi-stage challenge to find Charlie’s treasure based on those new clues. Sources are certain that the only physical cache is the treasure itself at the final co-ordinates. Intermediate locations must be deduced with help from the verse below, allegedly taken from the diaries of Capt. Charlie himself!

Solving the riddle at each stage will provide you with a number. The digits of this number are used to complete the co-ordinates for the next stage. For example, if the number you arrive at is 845:

N 43 00.**0, W 079 00.0*0 becomes
N 43 00.840, W 079 00.050

If you’re driving to the cache, the recommended starting location is the East Point Park parking lot at the corner of Copperfield Rd. and Beechgrove Dr. See coordinates below. From here it’s estimated your search will take you on a 4km round trip over varied terrain. At a minumum, light hiking footwear with good tread is recommended. If the lake water is high, prepare to have wet feet or do a little rock scrambling. A calculator might also come in handy. For those planning to swap something at the cache rather than plunder it (Arrrrrr!), the treasure is said to contain jewelry, "precious" stones, beads & coins.

Some final tips. Little is known of Capt. Charlie, but when it came to hiding and mapping treasure, he was fond of carving cryptic route markers into large rocks--often the very rocks that shipwrecked him! Keep in mind, however, that any such markers are almost 300 years old now and may be tricky to spot. Search with the eyes of an archeologist. If you get stuck anywhere along the way, always return to Charlie's verse. Its words are certainly rich with clues.

Good Luck!

Take heed my treasure hunting friend
That many have gone 'round the bend
In search of doubloons, pounds and francs
And found themselves between two banks!

For those of virtue, thick of skin
This is where your quest begins
Count the knobby planks below
Add seven’s luck—now off you go!

N 43 46.**0, W 079 08.5*0

Forging through the great unknown
You spy a figure in the stone
Eyes ahead and in to shore
Take it, and some nineteen more

At your feet a welcome find
Tiwaz's rune points to a sign
