#3 in a series of discontinued, abandoned, or long forgotten roads within Townsend.
Townsend has a few roads that over the course of time have been abandoned, discontinued, or maintenance has stopped on them.
Old Meetinghouse Road is one of the oldest roads in Townsend and originally went right by the front steps of the first and second Meetinghouses built in Townsend.
The road is now truncated into three separate pieces:
The first stretch of road is off of Highland Street (where you access Meetinghouse Park) and proceeds until it meets Greeley Road just off of Route 119.
A short distance down 119, Old Meetinghouse Road picks back up and continues southerly until it hits the Squannacook River. There used to be a crossable bridge at this point, but it has long since disappeared and was never replaced.
The third and final portion of Old Meetinghouse Road is accessed at the point where South Row Road becomes South Harbor Road.
From near the spot where you will park you can look across the river and see the abuttment where the original bridge used to span the river.
...hhhmmm - sounds like another road lost to time, memory, and the elements.
Happy 'Caching!
