A Short Multi-Cache set around the parish Church of St John the
Baptist in the village of Puttenham, Surrey.
The Co-ordinates above are for the Church Gate. Parking is
available nearby. Allow about 20 minutes for this cache.
Puttenham is a village in Surrey, England just south of the Hog's
Back which is the chalk ridge of the North Downs. Puttenham is to
the south of the A31 which runs between Guildford and
Farnham.
St John the Baptist church is towards the eastern end of the
village. This church was built in several stages. The oldest part
is late Saxon; in 1160, Norman pillars were built. In the 13th
century, the Lady Chapel was added and in the 15th century the
tower was added. In the 18th century it was destroyed by fire but
was restored in the 20th century.
Just inside the Church Gates is an interesting underground
feature:
When was it last used? (ABCD)
When was it re-discovered (EFGH)
Now do a circuit of the Church itself and answer these
questions:
How many clocks on the Tower? (J)
What is the date on the rainwater hoppers on the North side?
(KLMN)
A new door has been added to the North wall at the Chancel end just
before WW1, but what is the exact date? (PQRS)
Note the movement detector placed over a crack in the wall about 5m
east of the door.
The cache can be found a short walk away at :
N51 1 [L – C] . [E + N] M Q W000 [H + J] S . D C S
Please take care on the way to the cache, use the pavements where
they are available and beware of traffic on these deceptively busy
narrow roads. Hold on tight to mini-geocachers and geodogs. There
is no pen, so please bring your own.
If anybody would like to expand this Church Micro series, please
do, we would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first
so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid
duplication.
