10 Years! Oakley, CA

It all started on May 1st, 2000 when President Clinton announced that the scrambling of the satellite navigation system, known as Selective Availability (SA), would be turned off.

On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade.

On May 3rd Dave Ulmer placed his own container, a black bucket, in the woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon, near Portland. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav: N 45°17.460 W 122° 24.800. The location of the original GPS stash now features a tribute plaque.

Within three days two different people read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container and shared their experiences online. The sport of geocaching was born!

Join us for a morning of fun, finds and excellent company in the California Delta. Located along the convergence of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers, the Gateway to the Delta is a geocache rich area with plenty of recreational excursions (fishing, boating, water sports, hiking, regional parks). Come spend your day finding the diverse caches in and around the area. Whether you enjoy multies that lead you on a hike, large caches full of awesome swag, travel bug & geocoin hotels or clever micros, the Delta has something for all. Plus, there are four existing geocaches within walking distance of our event.

Our celebration will begin with the morning event: 10 Years! Oakley, CA. We will meet at 9:00 AM at the picnic tables of the Antioch/Oakley Shoreline Park located at N 38° 01.005 W 121° 45.047. Our morning will provide many opportunities to meet new friends and ‘geotalk’. We’ve prepared GeoBingo, door prizes and a Thieving Muggle Exchange* along with a geocoin exchange

Be sure to sign our log book as you arrive and you will receive your ticket for our doorprizes, along with your GeoBingo card. Your completed bingo card will earn you BONUS tickets for our doorprize drawing! Plus you can drop off your “geo item” for our Thieving Muggle Exchange.

We look forward to seeing you for a fun-filled 10 Year Celebration!!!!

We are asking each person to bring a ‘geo’ related item for the Thieving Muggle Exchange. It may be new, recently loved or custom made, with a value no greater than $10.00. Custom made caches are especially encouraged, along with high quality swag. Please decoratively wrap or bag your item to retain its secrecy.

Be sure to bring a chair or blanket to sit on as there are only a few benches. Also bring your own drinks and snacks. There is a McDonalds down the road, but nothing to eat/drink at the park.
