La Torre Niccolai, una antica torre di vedetta vicino a Ripafratta.

In questa zona, sul confine tra le città di Lucca e Pisa, sorsero tra il 1100 e il 1300 tutta una serie di opere fortificate e di torri di avvistamento e segnalazione. Le varie torri erano in contatto visivo tra loro, per poter comunicare tramite segnali (con specchi di giorno, con segnali luminosi la notte). Alcune di queste torri furono distrutte durante l'occupazione tedesca nella II Guerra Mondiale, altre si sono conservate fino ai nostri giorni.
Torre quadrilatera, risalente al XIII sec., apparteneva al sistema difensivo gravitante intorno alla rocca di Ripafratta, di cui difendeva un percorso d’aggiramento. Ancora in buono stato di conservazione, la Torre Niccolai continuò fino al XV sec. a svolgere le sue mansioni militari.
Per raggiungere la Torre Niccolai si parte da via Silvio Lega, a Ripafratta. In fondo a questa stretta via parte il sentiero 00 che si inerpica sulla collina. Dopo 400m troverete una biforcazione, seguite il sentiero a sinistra che va verso la Rocca di Ripafratta, dopo circa 50m vedrete, alla vostra destra, la Torre Niccolai in cima alla collina.
Salite da qui per raggiungere la torre (i cartelli indicano che si raggiunge dal sentiero 10, noi non abbiamo trovato accesso da qua, nemmeno chiedendo agli abitanti della zona). Caratteristica di questa torre è la mancanza di un ingresso accessibile (a meno che non siate l'Uomo Ragno)...la cache è quindi nascosta nelle immediate vicinanze della Torre.
IL BONUS - Abbiamo voluto premiare i volenterosi che visiteranno entrambe le Torri di Ripafratta con una cache bonus.
All'interno di questa cache (un contenitore quadrato lock'n'lock), sul logbook, troverete infatti metà delle coordinate per la cache bonus "La terza torre", l'altra metà la troverete nella Torre Centino (cache La Prima Torre). Quindi, buona caccia e buon divertimento a tutti !!!
Questo è un ottimo punto di partenza per altre caches vicine, quali Rocca di Ripafratta e Rupe Cava, tutte raggiungibili dai vari sentieri.

On the borderline from Lucca and Pisa it were built in 1100-1300 various sight-towers. These towers are in sight one to another, so they can communicate by signals (with mirrors in day, with fire in night). Some of these towers were destroyed by Germans during WWII.
The Tower Niccolai granted control on the path around Rocca di Riprafratta. This tower was built at the beginning of XIII cent. and had a square plant.
To reach the Tower Niccolai you can start in Via Silvio Lega, in Ripafratta. At the end of this little street begins path 00, that climb on the hill. After 400m you find a bifurcation, follow the path on the left that arrives at Rocca di Ripafratta, after 50m you can see, on your right, the tower at the top of the hill.
Climb here to reach the tower (the signs shows that you can reach Tower Niccolai from path 10, we was not able to find the way, we asked inhabitants too, but no way..). This tower don't have an access to go into it (if you don't be Spiderman)..so the cache is hidden in the nearest of the Tower.
THE BONUS - We want to reward who wants to visit both the Towers of Ripafratta with a bonus cache. In fact, into this cache (a square lock'n'lock), on the logbook, you can find half of the coordinates for the bonus cache "La terza torre" (The third tower), the other half you can find in Tower Centino (cache La Prima Torre - The First Tower). Good hunt !!
This is a good starting place for other caches in near, like Rocca di Ripafratta and Rupe Cava, that you can reach by the various paths around.
