Geocache Description:

A small cache hidden near a really cool giant. Five dollars for the first to find. Please be careful searching for the cache as the area is delicate.

The Avatar Giant is found 10 minutes from a main logging road. Tread carefully in this unique forest which has NEVER been logged. There are no real trails but a faint foot path leads to the tree. Located in a cut block possibly slated for harvesting in the near future. (Once you have found the cache be sure to check out the forest on the other side of the road -carefully! - its really cool too!).

*** Congratulations to TDI2000 FTF!!!***

Update: Since I hid this cache over seven years ago the area has undergone great changes. The giant is now within a protected zone. There is a nice set of stairs instead of the steep slippery bank we first hoisted ourselves up. There are lovely sections of boardwalk and a viewing zone. There are some real rooty bits of trail so you still get that solid, west coast experience of hiking in a rain forest.

The area around the giant has greatly worn away since I first saw it. There is no more delicate, undergrowth of tiny green leaves, no baby trees right beside the giant and the ground has now become somewhat hard packed instead of the ankle deep forest duff. I remember the day we read about the Avatar Giant and decided to check it out that very weekend. We had no idea where it was. We drove on logging roads to the general area which matched the description in the news article and lo and behold we rounded the corner and found quite a few cars parked on the side. There was a rudimentary trail up the bank. A pink flagged route got us in there but we lost it and bushwhacked through the salal. We reached the creek, crossed it and looked up: there was the giant with the distinct burl. There was Ken Wu talking talking to a big group of people seated below him. THAT explains the vehicles! We gazed up and listened to Ken for a bit and gazed some more at the wonderful tree. I quietly hid the cache and we pulled ourselves away.

Since that day thousands of people have visited the Avatar Grove and gazed in wonder at the huge trees. The area HAD to be protected because people demanded it! There was no way this guy would ever be cut down. I hope you enjoy your visit to this giant.
