Geocache Description:

Wherigo is a GPS based activity that can be played outdoor, which was created by Groundspeak A simple description is a mix between an adventure game and a geocache search.

People can develop self-enclosed story files (called "cartridges") that are installed on a GPS enabled unit along with a player program. The player and story take advantage of the location information provided by the GPS to trigger in-game events, such as reaching a virtual object or interacting with characters. Completing an adventure can require reaching different locations and solving puzzles.

Wirral Wherigo is a very simple cartridge, and is similar to a normal multi-cache. It will lead you to a few interesting places before taking you to the actual cache; a walk that should only take 15-20 minutes. It is being released to coincide with the “ Egg-stravaganza in the Park” event - GC24FCG, so that everyone can try a Wherigo cache – and get the icon!

In order to play this Wherigo you will need to download the cartridge from HERE into a suitable GPS enabled device. These include PDAs, various GPSr’s and some smart phones. I’ll be bringing my PDA (Mio Digiwalker P550) & GPS (Garmin Colorado 300) to the event loaded with the cartridge for those that don’t have a suitable device. Please do not look at this in the ‘emulator’ as that will detract from your experience on the day of your visit.

The cache itself is a small Snap’n’lock box covered with a stone and can easily be reached from the path. It can get busy with walkers and people pursuing other pastimes so stealth will be required (if in any doubt, decrypt the hint). Additionally, care will be needed with young children and dogs owing to the surrounding area.

Please e-mail me your comments on how this cartridge worked. It's my first attempt at a Wherigo and its been a steep learning curve. It's also very likely I've missed something somewhere so appreciate any feedback.

Finally, remember to save the state of play on a regular basis, just in case you hit any problems, otherwise you'll have to go right back to the start (of both the game, and walk back to the start area to begin playing again!)

FINAL FIELD TEST :
MIO P550 Digiwalker - was slow responsing to movement (this has been the case with previous Wherigos) but worked exactly as planned.
Garmin Colorado/Oregon - Excellent responsiveness, but did something unexpected at the cache location.

Tweaked cartridge a little and retested in emulator, even though the Emulator did not recreate the Colorado issue. Will monitor feedback received. If you do have issues you can still claim your find provided you signed the logbook in the cache.

Easter Sunday - It's worked on PDA's and worked on a phone - but the Colorado still plays up at the very end! I'll continue to try to work that out. Be interesting to know what happens when its attempted with an Oregon and/or Dakota!
