Geocache Description:

The cache is a sandwich sized lock n lock.

Geocache decal for FTF.

The first fort west of the Oconee River, Fort Wilkinson (named after James Wilkinson, Commander in Chief of the U. S. Military) stood on a bluff overlooking the river. Built in 1797, it was a trading post & fort for developing friendly relationships with the local Indians.
On June 16, 1802 the Creek Indians & U. S. commissioners signed the Treaty of Fort Wilkinson, which ceded Creek lands, that later became Baldwin & Wilkinson counties.
In 1807, the garrison was moved to Ft. Hawkins, now Macon, on the Ocmulgee River.
One foundation stone of the original fort still remains.
