A small cache (0.2 l screw-top container) hidden close to the ruins of St Saviour Church.
You'll pass this place when hiking the Surlingham Church Marshes Circular Walk.
The Church Marsh nature reserve in Surlingham is owned by the RSPB and is overlooked by the ruins of St Saviour's church. Dating from the 12th century, the church was in regular use until 1705.
It is the entirely appropriate last resting place of Ted Ellis and his beloved wife Phyllis.
Ted Ellis was a well-known writer and TV personality and died in 1986 after a lifetime devoted to natural history.
He had an extensive knowledge of the wildlife and eco-systems of the Norfolk Broads and became known as 'the people's naturalist' and one of the strongest activists to preserve the natural habitats of this part of England.
Today, his old home at Wheatfen serves as a nature reserve, see (visit link)
With every walk and every caching weekend we realize again and again the outstanding beauty of this area which is preserved to this day, thanks to the likes of Mr. Ellis.
We are absolutely convinced that Ted would be an enthusiastic geocacher if he would still be with us. Therefore we are dedicating this cache to him, to remember his work and influence.
David Bellamy the environmental campaigner said, "Wheatfen Broad is, in its way, as important as Mount Everest or the giant redwood forests of North America. It is probably the best bit of fenland we have because we know so much about it. That is purely because one man gave his life trying to understand it - Ted Ellis"
We say ''Thanks Ted!''
The actual church ruins are fenced in and obviously the cache is not hidden there!
Although this place is open for the public, please pay the respect for the people resting in peace here!
At the time of publishing, the container contained:
- Logbook & pen
- Rubber duck
- Breast cancer care pin
- TB GoEast
- A little surprise for the first finder
and a fish.
Have fun with the cache!
