Geocache Description:

This cache is set to mark the bottom of one of Swansea's landmarks. As you have probably guessed, my other cache, ‘Do You Have the Constitution? #2’ marks the top. The hill leads up from Hanover Street which is just behind Walter Road in Swansea - from the junction of Humphrey Street and Walter Road you can see it rising on its 1 in 3 gradient. Constitution Hill is one of the steepest residential streets in Britain.

Constitution Hill leads up toward Townhill from the City Centre. The steep and cobbled street was made famous during a daring car stunt in the film 'Twin Town'. Traffic calming measures have been introduced which stop this escapade from being copied. The hill marks part of the boundary between the Castle and Uplands electoral wards.

Another notable fact about this steeply cobbled hill is that there was a tram service housed here called the Constitution Hill Incline Tramway, built to serve new housing in the Mount Pleasant area. The system involved two counterbalanced cars in funicular style (cable railway) seating 18 people; a similar principle to the San Francisco tram system. It was one of the shortest serving railways in history, lasting for just 2 years at the turn of the 19th century and was dismantled as it failed to secure a Board of Trade Passenger Certificate.

Whether you attack these two caches from the bottom or the top I heartily encourage the humming of Dvorak's Symphony No. 9, Opus 95, "From the New World" (second movement), that has become popularised as the song "Goin' Home", aka the music from the old Hovis bread advert. Incidentally, for anyone who may be interested, this advert was directed by Ridley Scott of 'Alien', 'Gladiator' and 'Thelma and Louise' fame! Apologies to any youngsters or visitors from other countries who have no idea what I'm talking about! Have a search online - it's a classic!

On street parking spaces are available at the top and the bottom of the hill – Hanover Street at the bottom and Terrace Road at the top.

The cache is accessible to a wheelchair user.

The cache container is a nano (sorry!) so please provide your own pen or pencil.

Do you have the constitution to visit 'Do You Have the Constitution #2’?

Most important of all, have fun!
