How well do you know, or can find the answers to some puzzles about our great 50 United States?

2010 is the year for the Federal Census. The official date for the census is April 1st. The first U.S. Census was conducted in 1790 by Federal marshals. Census takers went door to door and recorded the name of the head of the household and the number of people in each household. Slaves were enumerated, but only three out of five were counted for apportionment. American Indians, being neither taxed nor considered during apportionment, were not counted in the census. The first census counted 3.9 million people, less than half the population of New York City in 2000; the 2000 census counted over 281 million people. In addition to the decennial federal census, many states have also conducted their own censuses over the years.

The 1790-1840 censuses listed only the name of the head of each household, with others listed by gender and age group. In the 1850-1870 censuses, all members of the household were listed, but no relationships were given. The state of birth of each person was also included. In the 1880 census, the relationship of each person to the head of household was added, as well as the place of birth of the parents of each individual.

The majority of the 1890 census was lost in a fire in a federal building. The 1900 census gives the month and year of birth of each individual; and for women the number of children they had given birth to and how many of those children were still living; along with other details not included on earlier censuses. The 1910-1930 censuses are similar to the 1900 except that the birth date is not listed, only the age. The later censuses included similar information, but are not available to the public for 72 years after the date of the census.

In the 2000 census, Nevada had the greatest increase population compared to the 1990 census, at a 66.3% increase. The District of Columbia had a decrease in population of 5.7%. The state with the lowest increase was North Dakota at 0.5%. California had the largest population with 33,871,648; and Wyoming had the smallest with 493,782. The 2010 Census statistics still show California with the largest population at 37,253,956, and Wyoming with the smallest at 563,626.

For this puzzle, match the state with the listed population from the 2000 Federal Census.
