Geocache Description:

Regular sized lock 'n' lock in the 909.

We’ve enjoyed the many caches at Stewart State Forest, and thought we’d do our part to put a lot out in the Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Area. With 909 acres, there’s room for lots more!

For this series, we parked just off the TSP, about .38 mile north of Rossway Road in the designated parking area. Depending on the time of year, you might be able to drive just a bit closer. We started by following the blue trail but eventually we left that and followed small trails, and then ended up on an old road. Alternately, this could be approached from the other side via the orange snowmobile trail, and then picking up the old road up the hill.

Loggerhead Shrikes can be found all across the US, but I’ve never seen one in Dutchess County. Shrikes are predators like hawks, but since they lack the talons to hold their prey, they use other things as ‘tools’ (such as thorns) to hold their food. In order to get this cache, you will have to use the ‘tool’ that is attached to the cache in order to retrieve it.

New Year's Resolution #13 of 12.

***Update 4/6/13: Like birds often do, this cache has migrated from where we hid it. The old spot is now surrounded by prickers, so it's good that it's moved 'uptown'. No tool is necessary to retrieve this cache. It's easier than it was, but I don't want to change the rating so far into the game.
