In ancient Greek mythology Nereus was the eldest son of the sea god Pontus and the earth goddess Gaia. Although not god-like in appearance, this Old Man of the Sea may be the saviour of our environment – currently about 85% of Victoria's electricity comes from brown coal, the dirtiest of the major energy sources.
Nereus’ blue arms, above, are usually underwater – with the sea nymphs!
Nereus works on the same principles as a wind turbine, and is already feeding electricity into the grid – a world first!
It works on a horizontal axis, creating kinetic energy as it’s rotated by tidal flows; there’s even scope to apply the technology to fast flowing rivers.
