We were heading down the trail to place a cache when we got a kick in the gut. We found a memorial to a woman we knew.
Rita was a very sweet woman with two boys about the same age as our daughter. Their family lived across the street from us. A very pleasant person, some of our fondest memories of this neighborhood involve pleasant evening conversations with her out by the street as we watched the children play.
She was a giving person, often volunteering for many things. Some time after they had moved to another neighborhood, she was killed when a delivery van hit her on a rainy morning as she was riding her bicycle to work (Lenexa to south Olathe) as a preparation for her planned participation in the MS Bikeathon.
She was not a celebrity, but she was loved. Her funeral, planned for her church, had to be moved to a bigger facility to handle the large number of mourners.
We had not heard that her co-workers had commisioned this memorial to her.
