AlbaNova

AlbaNova universitetscentrum, är en byggnadsanläggning vid Albano i Stockholm. Det uppfördes för Fysikcentrum, det tänkta samarbetet mellan fysikinstitutionerna på Stockholms universitet och Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan. Fysikcentrum är inte en officiell benämning på centrumet utan ett namn på byggprojektet. Under 2001–2002 hette centret endast Stockholms centrum för fysik, astronomi och bioteknik, förkortat SCFAB, för att därefter byta huvudnamn till AlbaNova.

Eftersom forskningsmedlen till fysik minskades under tiden huset byggdes, till fördel för bland annat bioteknik, fick centrumet en mer blandad inriktning. Idag finns i huvudsak ämnesområdena fysik, astronomi, bioteknik, bioinformatik, strukturbiokemi representerade i Alba Nova. Till stockholms universitet hör Astronomiska institutionen, fysikum, och Stockholm Bioinformatic Centre, andra institutioner tillhör KTH. Även Vetenskapens hus, ett projekt för att nå ut till allmänheten med modern forskning, har sin plats vid Alba Nova.

Projektet fördröjdes i ett och ett halvt år på grund av dess förväntade inverkan på Hagaparken och Nationalstadsparken och är fortfarande kontroversiellt, trots att byggprojektet allmänt anses mycket lyckat.

De äldre delarna - Roslagstulls epidemisjukhus.

De äldre byggnaderna är ursprungligen uppförda för Roslagstulls sjukhus, tidigare Roslagstulls epidemisjukhus. Staden hade sedan 1820-talet ett epedimisjukhus i det tidigare Katarina konobryggeri på Södermalm, men nya krav på vården gjorde att det fanns ett behov av modernare vårdlokaler. Stadsfullmäktige beslutade den 28 mars 1890 att bygga sjukhuset, som öppnade 18 september 1893. Sjukhuset stängde 1993 och numera upptas de flesta lokalerna av AlbaNova, även Engelska skolan finns i lokalerna.

AlbaNovas huvudbyggnad

Huvudbyggnaden ritades av Henning Larsen och blev år 2001 utsedd till ”Stockholms vackraste hus”. Byggnaden består av fyra hus delade av en inglasad gata och ett stort trapphus. Ett av de mest kända och sublima konstverken utgörs av speglar som projicerar solkatter på de vitputsade väggarna på gågatan. Speglarna är upphängda så de rör sig med vinden

Huvudbyggnaden avbildas ofta från baksidan, den sida som man ser om man kommer längs roslagsvägen norrifrån. På framsidan är en cirkelformad femte byggnad, rotundan. En bro leder in till rotundans entréplan. På övre plan i rotundan finns biblioteket och byggnaden kröns av en utomhusterrass och en kupol. I kupolen inryms ett observatorium, där Institutionen för astronomi vid Stockholms universitet förfogar över det tysktillverkade Alba Nova-teleskopet. Teleskopet är ett av Sveriges största optiska teleskop med sin spegeldiameter på en meter och brännvidd av elva meter. Det väger 2,3 ton. Teleskopet med fundament lyftes in i kupolen den sista oktober 2007. Det invigdes den 8 januari 2009.

Ljusförhållandena medger inte avancerade observationer i forskningssyfte. Teleskopet avses primärt användas vid utveckling och utprovning av astronomiska instrument och kamerautrustning. Teleskopet drivs i samarbete med Institutionen för tillämpad fysik vid Kungliga tekniska högskolan, som använder instrumentet för forskning inom miljöfysik.

Delar av filmen Beck – Sista vittnet spelades in i byggnaden. Det finns också en lunchrestaurang i huset om du vill ha något att äta.

Andra byggnader

Ytterligare en byggnad uppfördes i samband med att huvudbyggnaden byggdes. Ca 50 meter söderut från cachen på vänster sida finns en byggnad med svepande fasader i vit puts och ek. I detta hus finns bland annat Vetenskapens hus.

AlbaNova

AlbaNova University Center is a campus at Albano in Stockholm. It was built for “Fysikcentrum” (Physics Center), the planned cooperation between the Physics Department at Stockholm University and Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). Physics Center is not an official term for the center but a name on the building project. During 2001-2002 the Centre was called simply Stockholm Centre for Physics, Astronomy and Biotechnology, abbreviated SCFAB. The name was then changed to AlbaNova.

Since the research fundings to physics was reduced during the time the house was built, to the benefit of biotechnology, the Centre got a more mixed approach. The subjects studied today are physics, astronomy, biotechnology, bioinformatics, structural biochemistry. Departments belonging to Stockholm University are Department of Astronomy, Physics Department, and Stockholm Bioinformatics Center. Otherther institutions are belonging to KTH. You can also find The House of Science, a project to reach out to the public with contemporary research at AlbaNova.

The project was delayed in one and a half years because of its expected impact on the Haga Park and the National City Park and is still controversial, although the construction project is generally considered very successful.

The older parts - Roslagstull-epidemic hospital.

The older buildings were constructed for Roslagstull epicemic hospital. The city had since the 1820s an epidemic hospital in Södermalm, but new demands on health care demanded more modern medical facilities. City Council decided on 28 March 1890 to build the hospital which opened September 18, 1893. The hospital closed in 1993 and now the majority of premises are now occupied by AlbaNova, although the English school are also in the premises.

AlbaNova main building

The main building was designed by Henning Larsen and was nominated in 2001 for "Stockholm's most beautiful houses". The building consists of four houses shared by a glassed-in street and a large staircase. One of the most renowned and sublime works of art is the mirror that projects cats thrown on the whitewashed walls of the pedestrian precinct. The mirrors are hung so they move with the wind

The main building is often depicted from the rear, the side that you see from Roslagsvägen from the the north. On the front is a circular fifth building, the rotunda. A bridge leads into the Rotunda entrance floor. On the second floor rotunda of the library and the building is crowned by an outdoor terrace and a dome. The dome houses an observatory, where the Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University has the German-made AlbaNova Telescope. The telescope is one of Sweden’s largest optical telescope with a mirror diameter of one meter and the focal length of eleven feet. It weighs 2.3 tonnes. The telescope was lifted into the base of the dome on the last October 2007. It was opened on 8 January 2009.

Lighting conditions does not permit observation of advanced scientific research. The Telescope is primarily used for development and testing of astronomical instruments and camera equipment. The telescope is operated in cooperation with the Department of Applied Physics at the Royal Institute of Technology, who uses the instrument for research in environmental physics.

Parts of the movie “Beck - The last witness” was shot in the building. There is also a lunch restaurant in the house if you want something to eat.

Other buildings

Another building was erected when the main building was built. Approximately 50 meters south from the cache on your left is a building with sweeping facades of plaster and white oak. In this house you will find the House of Science.
