Borgundkaupangen
Here at Borgundkaupangen is a Medieval Age Museum close to the remains of the Borgund kapuang. The "kaupang" means "trading place" and right here, people have been living and trading for several thousand years. This was the first important community at Sunnmøre that we know of today, and the peak period was between 1200 - 1300 A.D. Around 450 people lived here at the kaupang area. Several churches were build here, and there are still some remains of one of them (Mariakirka). Here one could find and trade fish, animals and farm products, blacksmiths, timber and wood, schoemakers etc. The old "city" disappeared as a result of the Black Death plague around 1350 A.D.
The muesum displays items found during the many excavations carried out in the Borgundkaupangen.
