Geocache Description:

Moderate to heavy hike for the first 1¼ mile hiked (as measured by ground traveled, not distance to cache) after that terrain levels out a bit. Cache is a green ammo box, and the hint is not very helpful once you see the area your in. Sorry, I could not think of a better one. So you will have to really use your GPS skills. In spring, or with snow on the ground, this will take some searching. Fall may be the easiest hunt, but the least pretty view.

This is a most excellent hike, and I found out about it from the excellent book "Trail Guide to Northern Colorado" by Melodie S. Edwards (no relation). I think her desciption from the book is spot on…

"This hike provides one of the most superb examples of northern Colorado's natural diversity, the perfect place to bring a visitor who has had no experience of our wild places."

Exactly! You start with a very desert like section, and then you move to an area of ponderosa pines, and… well you need take the trail, it rocks! Be sure to bring your camera along for some fantastic views of Poudre canyon. I plan to check out this trail again in the early summer and early fall because I am sure the area will change its look.

This cache is also very different for me because I had a pretty crazy experience when I went to place the cache. Other possible names of for cache were "Lost Dog Cache", "Bad pet owner cache" and "Where did all the elk come from! cache"

As I approached the spot I wanted to place the cache my dog Gabe kept pulling at me… Fine, so I let him go. Next thing I know Gabe bolts off and scares a heard of Elk that were all around me! OK so I'm not that observant, and I was looking at the GPS. Gabe chases the heard strait up a nearby hill and very quickly loses sight of me. Several minutes later he came back as usual, but when I called to him I think the echo confused him and he turned, not to me, but towards the trail leading home. So I kept calling for him while I placed the cache (The log entry should make for interesting reading). Then I stuck around the area as long as I dared because it was starting to get dark. I gave up on finding Gabe that day, and probably forever. When I was nearly to the bridge, there was Gabe drinking from the stream, and he just turned to look at me like "what took you so long". I put him on his leash and went home in a startled, but elated mood.

I certainly hope your trip is much less eventful!

  • Items at the time of placement were:
  • A laser etched envelope holder that I got from my very first cache "A Cache"
