This is micro container located at another historical site (this time WWII) within my Home town.
According to Dorreen Potts' book 'Look back at Halstead' – available from Halstead museum (located in Townford mill complex (straddles the river Colne). This field is where travelling fairs stop (normally twice a year – I can recommend the dodge 'ems). It is a local joke that every time the fair arrives it rains and makes it very muddy. In my experience this is true !
During World War 11, a 24 hour guard was stationed here in case the enemy tried to infiltrate along the railway line and in February 1944 the 1st Battalion Dorset Regiment (which was an elite combat force – trained to be first assault units) gathered to be addressed by General Montgomery (their head quarters was at Dynes Hall – where King George VI and 'Monty' paid them a visit).
The Battalion was part of the first assault units who spearheaded the D-Day landings on the Arromanches beach in the early morning of June 6th, 1944 (I have personally visited the beaches where they landed in Normandy). If ever you feel that your life in the 21st Century is not as happy as you'd like, I suggest reading some of personal accounts of the D-Day landings & I can guarantee you will be so thankful you live today & feel lucky you likely will not have to experience the horrors of combat. This cache is in memory of those incredibly brave men.
