Geocache Description:

Welcome to Symington Strolls – a series of 15 traditional caches in and around the area of this delightful South Ayrshire village. This is Number 4 in the series but can also be taken as a cache-n-dash. The complete circuit is under 10 miles long. It loops back through the village and can therefore be done in 2 stages. All these caches can of course also be attempted individually.

During these walks you will encounter the usual caching challenges of terrain, navigation and retrieval. There’s nothing steep to climb but some sections of the series are on tracks which can get a little overgrown and these can also get quite muddy after heavy rain. Wildlife such as roe deer, hawks, squirrels, rabbits, etc may be seen. Where appropriate, additional information regarding safety, parking, etc and occasionally a little history is provided in our notes for each cache. Free parking is available throughout the village. All parking should be in accordance with any local signage, by-laws,etc.
Following the Land Reform (Scotland) Act (2003) which gave everyone access to most land and inland waters, Scottish local authorities have been setting out a basic network of routes (Core Paths) to give the public the confidence of clearly defined routes by which to enjoy more of our countryside. This gently sloping walk follows a part of one of these proposed Core Paths, the route being that of an old carriage way leading from the village past Dankeith House and the Core Path will eventually finish in Dundonald. It has already benefitted from limited Lottery Funding but is currently in a varied state of repair with a few fallen trees to step over and some sections get muddy in wet weather so it is not suitable for wheelchair users at this time. During WW2, Dankeith House was used as Officers Quarters for 516 Combined Operations Squadron (RAF Dundonald) where preparations for the D-Day landings were made - in particular training in all aspects of air co-operation involving fighter support and control, smoke laying, close support bombing and front gun recognition of all manner of assault ships and landing craft. The house, which was built in 1893, is no longer used as a residence and is falling into disrepair. However the grounds adjacent to the house are currently employed as a static caravan park.
The cache is a small food container in the biggest and tallest tree in the wood and which would need at least 3 people with outstretched arms to link up around it. Please feel free to give this very old tree a little hug :)) The cache is sited within the woods not far from the now derelict walled gardens and greenhouses of Dankeith. After (hopefully) discovering the cache you can continue on the path, passing Dankeith House and and down its formal driveway to join the B730. As you get near this cache, the pathway is occasionally used by farm vehicles. There is tree cover for most of this section so your GPS might struggle at times. Free parking is available at Lomond View, Symington.
If continuing to Number 5 in this series, please be aware that the path from near the cache and the road past Dankeith House down to the B730 are used by the caravan park owners, tenants and their vehicles. Please also be aware of road traffic when you reach the B730 although there is a wide grassy verge to walk along until you reach the road junction near cache Number 5.
