An easy park-n-grab cache located near a bypassed section of State Route 39 just east of Summersville, West Virginia.
From U.S. Route 19, go east on State Route 39. After crossing Brock's Bridge, there is a turn off to the right a short distance (about .20 mile) beyond the east end of the bridge. You will then be on a bypassed section of Route 39 that used to lead to an older bridge that was demolished and replaced by the span that you just drove over. Just park and follow your GPSr from there.
It is not necessary to go beyond the red gate or down the old section of road that parallels the existing highway. However, if you are interested in doing some exploring, you can walk down the old road to where the previous bridge used to be and get some great high views of Gauley River and Summersville Lake. If you continue on where the old road curves under the new bridge and goes downhill, you will be on an even older abandoned section of Route 39 remaining from when the highway was moved to higher ground during the construction of Summersville Lake in the early 1960s. If the lake is at winter pool, you will also be able to see the foundations of the original Brock's Bridge that was submerged when the lake was completed. If you are into benchmark hunting, benchmark disk HX1226 is located in the rock face on the east side of this old section of road.
The cache is in a small 2" x 6.5" oblong container. There is an uncirculated 1963-D silver Roosevelt dime for the First-to-Find. The rest of the initial contents are: a finger light, toy ring, hair band, eraser, toy figure, 5 foreign coins, and a log sheet with pen.
