The Horizon Ballroom Mullingar was operated by former Taoiseach, Albert Reynolds and his brother. Parking is available at barrier to site.
From the late 1950’s until it closed, the Horizon was 'THE' concert venue in the Midlands and catered for all tastes of music. Premier acts such as Thin Lizzy, Johnny Cash, Chubby Checker, Aker Bilk, Roy Orbison and, of course, Joe Dolan all performed at the venue.
Towards the late 1970's, the live music scene in Ireland was in a dark period of decline. The Horizon Ballroom finally succumbed to that decline and closed its doors, forever, in the early 1980’s. The cache owner remembers going to a summercamp disco here in 1982 as an 8 year old boy.
Since closing, there have been many planning applications granted, but nothing ever materialised. A boundary wall was built in 1992 and the building was then bulldozed out of existence, probably to avoid the payment of a derelict site levy.
Today the site is just another empty space on the edge of town, a far cry from the entertainment hot spot it once was. Occasionally, the site is used when the circus comes to town.
