There are four defense temples in Jeonju.
They are called DonGoSa (East defense temple), SeoGoSa (West defense temple), NamGoSa (South defense temple), and JinBukSa (North defense temple).
This is the West defense temple.
대한불교조계종 제17교구 본사인 금산사의 말사이다. 908년(후백제 견훤왕 17) 명덕(明德)이 창건하였다. 후백제를 세운 견훤은 완산주(完山州:지금의 전주시)에 도읍을 정한 뒤 동서남북에 각각 동고진·서고진·남고진·북고진을 두고 각 진마다 사찰을 지어 외침을 막고자 하였다. 이 사찰은 서고진에 있었다.
1363년(고려 공민왕 12) 혜공(惠空)이 중창하였으며, 조선 초기에 벽송(碧松) 지엄(智嚴:1464∼1534)이 중건하였다. 그 뒤 불이 나서 폐사되었다가 조선 후기에 다시 중창하였고, 1951년에 중수하였다. 건물로는 대웅전과 나한전·미륵전·요사채 2동이 있으며, 유물로는 대웅전 안에 소형 석불이 전한다. 석불 조성 연대는 자세히 알 수 없다.
