Acronyms and initialisms often occur in jargon.
An initialism may have different meanings in different areas of
industry, writing, and scholarship.
The general reason for this is convenience and succinctness for
specialists, although it has led some to obfuscate the meaning
either intentionally, to deter those without such domain-specific
knowledge, or unintentionally, by creating an initialism that
already existed.
Acronyms sometimes move into the English language as true words,
such as radar and laser. They are no longer written in capital
letters, denoting a new status.
Whether one uses a computer, gaming device or cell phone,
children are speaking a whole new language these days. It is a form
of shorthand, known as acronyms or Internet chat lingo, and
it’s all the rage these days.
