Geocache Description:

Scott Bond Cemetery is located in Madison, Arkansas. You will be looking for a camouflaged pill bottle.

The cemetery still has active burials, but upkeep is an issue in some parts. Take some time to visit the Bond Family graves as well as the other older graves.

Scott Winfield Bond was born in Mississippi into slavery. At the start of the Civil War, he and his family moved with their slave owner to Tennessee and eventually to Cross County, Arkansas. Upon the death of his mother, his step-father moved him to Madison, Arkansas.

As a young adult, Bond rented over 2200 acres of farmland and began farming. He eventually married Magnolia Nash of Forrest City and they had 11 sons.

Bond excelled in business and farming but was unfortunately killed on March 24, 1933, by one of his registered bulls. Upon his death, Bond owned and farmed 12,000 acres of farm land, six cotton gins, a lumber business, orchards, a gravel pit, and operated a mercantile store.

Bond's son Ulysses (U.S.) Bonds eventually started Bondol Laboratories which made embalming fluid for African-American funeral homes. U.S. Bonds opened a motel in 1953 which catered to African-Americans. The hotel is long gone, but was once recognized as a premier hotel for African-Americans on US Highway 70.
