Geocache Description:

Small container near historic gun from naval ship.

Double Springs, a small town in the middle of Bankhead National Forest and near Lewis Smith Lake, is the county seat of Winston County. During the Civil War, the county gained notoriety for its opposition to the secession of Alabama from the Union. The county is now considered the "Free State of Winston."

The caches in Winston County explore some of my favorite places from home and many of the historical sites that played an important role in the history of our country.

This cache is located at the American Legion Home Post 184. At the site, you can see an old machine gun from a naval ship and the Winston County Veterans Memorial.
