La Pieve di Santa Maria a Chianni, nonostante le origini ben più antiche, risale alla fine del XII secolo e mostra l’influenza del romanico pisano, con struttura che ricorda il Duomo di Volterra, nell’impostazione basilicale. Il transetto ha cinque absidi; il presbiterio è sopraelevato e la copertura a capriate lignee; l’ornamento in terracotta del coro (XVI sec.) è probabile opera dei Gagni di Gambassi. I capitelli (variamente scolpiti nei singolari arcaismi delle decorazioni vegetali e antropomorfe, tra il bestiario simbolico e i volti “umani”, di cui uno reca la firma del suo artefice Joh(anne)s Bundi Vulus), le colonne (diverse tra loro nelle dimensioni e nei materiali lapidei, per ragioni statiche e di recupero degli elementi preesistenti, compresi i fusti monolitici) e gli archi compongono nella penombra dell’interno una forte suggestione di “rustica” espressività.
La Pieve è aperta al pubblico dal Lunedì al Sabato dalle 16.00 alle 19.00

Pieve of Santa Maria a Chianni, despite the origins of much more ancient, dating from the late twelfth century and the influence of the Pisan Romanesque, with a structure reminiscent of the cathedral of Volterra. The transept has five apses , the presbytery is raised and there are wooden trusses, the terra cotta ornament in the choir (XVI sec.) Is probably the work of Gagni from Gambassi. The capitals (variously sculpted in striking archaisms of plants and anthropomorphic decorations, including the symbolic bestiary and faces "human", one of theese bears the signature of its creator Joh (anne)s Bundi Vulus ), columns (different in terms of size and stone materials, for reasons still and recovery of existing elements, including monolithic drums) and arches up in the dark interior a strong suggestion of "rustic" expressivity.
Pieve open from Monday to Saturday from 4.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
