Geocache Description:

Marston Old Cut is the original route of the Trent & Mersey canal & was abandoned in the middle of the 20th Century due to the threat of salt mine related subsidence. Google Maps shows the cache in the canal! though the satellite view shows the correct position.

The cache now contains a small pencil.
Sorry. The long vegetation and can be quite wet after rain and makes finding the original towpath more difficult.

*** 11-Jul-10 Terrain updated to a 4 due to Nettles/Thistles. I will consider moveing the cache to a better place along the Old Cut. ***

Shortly after passing the Lion Salt Works (on the left) at Marston the Trent and Mersey canal used to navigate more Westerly than at present passing Marston Old Mine and Pool Mine before turning almost due North and curving Westerly above Marstonhall Mine. These mines were abandoned due to flooding and this, together with the later practice of brine pumping, dissolved the supporting pillars, leading to the inevitable collapse of the ground above the mine workings.

In 1957 a new 1/2 mile section of canal was built North West of the Pool Mine; an area at risk of subsiding due to salt extraction. Around six months after opening the new build was fully justified when part of the original canal disappeared in to a big hole!

Ordnance Survey Landranger and Explorer maps show the route as a public Right of Way. No fences need be crossed to reach the cache and the whole route of the original canal can be walked apart from a section within an area of subsided ground at N 53o 16.696’, W 002o 30.089’.

Do not attempt to enter this fenced off area!

Not much of the towpath edging remains visible but there is a fence to the West that (almost) defines the route. Watch out for brambles if you do walk the route. They seem to sit on the grass waiting to trip up the unwary walker. At N 53o 16.748’, W 002o 30.181‘ there is the remains of a wharf to what would have been Pool Mine.

A circular walk could take in: Skeg to Ness #182, The Lion Salt Works, Marston Old Cut, ANTHOLOGY "Old friends," [at this point you could extend the walk to include Be seeing you, Run Around Marbury One & With a cache I pass the key] and finally Step into Cheshire - Dairyhouse Meadow There are a couple of others that are also doable.

Congratulations for the First To Find go to "MPK Crew".
