Elder Creek enters the Sacramento River 12 miles south of the town
of Red Bluff. The stream flows into the Sacramento Valley from the
west, draining a watershed of approximately 142 square miles. There
are no significant dams on the stream, but there are several small
water diversions. The stream is generally intermittent with a
highly fluctuating flow regime. In recent years, it has supported
only a small run of salmon. Flow records indicate peak flows of
over 11,000 cubic feet per second, but the stream is normally dry
from July to November.
